Commentary

2 Samuel 18 is a chapter that focuses on the death of Absalom, the son of King David. This chapter begins with David's army marching out to battle against Absalom's forces. David instructs his commanders to deal gently with Absalom, but to be sure to bring him back alive. Unfortunately, Absalom is killed in the battle, and when David hears the news, he is overcome with grief. He mourns for his son, and orders that he be buried with honor. The chapter then shifts to a discussion of the aftermath of the battle. Joab, the commander of David's army, is angry with David for his leniency towards Absalom. He believes that David's mercy cost them the battle, and he expresses his displeasure to the king. David, however, is unmoved, and he continues to mourn for his son. The chapter ends with a brief description of the funeral procession for Absalom. The people of Israel mourn for him, and David is still overcome with grief. This chapter serves as a reminder of the tragedy of war, and of the cost of human life. It also serves as a reminder of the power of a father's love, and of the lengths to which a father will go to honor his son.
